Frequently asked questions

Getting started

How does the free consultation work?

It's a relaxed 30-minute video or phone call with an academic director. We'll ask about goals, current marks, upcoming tests and what has or hasn't worked before, then recommend a plan, with no obligation to continue.

What grades and levels do you teach?

Grade 3 through university and graduate school. Our specialist strengths are Grades 9–12 (including IB, AP and A-Level), first- and second-year university STEM, and research and graduate school mentorship.

Which subjects do you offer?

Mathematics, physics, chemistry, biology and computer science, plus university engineering, test and contest preparation, and research and graduate school mentorship. See our Subjects page.

Can I book an urgent session, like today or tomorrow?

Yes. Use Urgently Book Now: pick your subject, how long you need and a start time in your own time zone, then leave an email or cell number. We check availability and confirm by email or text, usually within 2 hours during office hours. Your session isn't booked until you hear from us. Need help within the hour? Call or text us.

How quickly can we start?

Most students begin within a week of their consultation. We keep our roster small, so spots fill quickly each term, especially before exam season. We recommend booking early.

Where are your students located?

Anywhere with an internet connection. We're based in Toronto and teach entirely online, with families across Canada, the U.S., the U.K. and Asia. Every session is scheduled in your local time.

Online sessions

How do online sessions work?

Every session is live and one-on-one over video (Zoom or Google Meet), with a shared digital whiteboard. The whiteboard is saved after each lesson, and parents are always welcome to sit in.

Is online tutoring as effective as in-person?

In our experience, yes, and often more so. There's no travel time, notes are saved for review, and you're matched with the best teacher for your course, not just whoever lives nearby.

How long are sessions, and how often?

Sessions are usually 60 minutes; 45 minutes for younger students and 90 minutes for senior, university and research sessions. Most students meet weekly, and twice weekly before major exams.

Will you help with homework?

Yes, in a way that builds independence. We use homework to teach the underlying ideas so students can do the work themselves. We never complete graded work for students.

What do we need for online sessions?

A laptop or tablet with a camera and a stable internet connection. A stylus is helpful but not required. We'll send everything you need before the first session.

Founders & teachers

Who founded AAD?

AAD was founded by two experts: a PhD from the University of Toronto with years of university research and teaching, and an MD from the University of Ottawa's Faculty of Medicine. Meet our founders.

Who are your teachers?

Our team of 10+ educators all hold or are completing Master's, PhD or MD degrees, and many are published researchers with university teaching experience. Every teacher is trained in the AAD method.

How do you match a teacher with my child?

We match on subject expertise, curriculum, level, learning style, personality and schedule. Your consultation notes go straight to the teacher, so the first session starts with context.

Can we change teachers?

Of course, at any time and at no cost. A strong student–teacher relationship matters.

Are your teachers background-checked?

Yes. We check references for every teacher, and every teacher who works with students under 18 provides a police vulnerable sector check.

Research & grad school

Can you help me publish a research paper?

Yes. Published researchers mentor students through the whole process: shaping the research question, analysing results, writing and structuring the paper, choosing a venue, submitting and responding to reviewers.

Do you help with Master's and PhD applications?

Yes: research statements and statements of purpose, academic CVs, contacting potential supervisors, scholarship applications and interview preparation. Our mentees are now in graduate programs in Canada and Europe.

Is research mentorship only for university students?

No. Ambitious high school students can complete real research projects for science fairs, competitions and university applications.

Programs & billing

How much does it cost?

Every student's needs are different, so we don't publish a one-size price list. In your free consultation we recommend the right program and walk you through clear, tailored options, with no pressure. Book your free consultation.

Which program is right for us?

Most families choose Term Academic Coaching for steady improvement; others need targeted one-on-one help, an exam bootcamp or research mentorship. See our Programs page, or let us recommend one in your consultation.

Are there sign-up fees or long contracts?

No. There are no registration fees and no long-term contracts.

How can I pay?

Interac e-Transfer and major credit cards. You'll receive an invoice and receipt for every payment.

Do you offer sibling or group options?

Yes. Siblings and small groups of 2–4 students can learn together. Ask about options in your consultation.

Policies

What is your cancellation policy?

Sessions can be rescheduled or cancelled free of charge with at least 24 hours' notice. We always make exceptions for genuine emergencies and illness.

What is your fit guarantee?

If your first paid session isn't the right fit, let us know within 48 hours. We'll refund it in full or re-match you with a different teacher, your choice.

How do you protect student privacy?

Information you share is used only to provide our services. We never sell or share personal information, and sessions are recorded only with your permission.

Progress & results

How do you measure progress?

A diagnostic baseline, notes after every session, practice results and school marks, plus a written progress report every four weeks on our coaching programs.

How soon will we see results?

Most families notice more confidence within the first few weeks. Marks typically follow within one or two reporting periods, depending on the starting point.

Do you guarantee grades?

No honest tutor can guarantee a grade. What we guarantee is expert teaching, a clear plan, transparent reporting and our fit guarantee.

No questions match your search. Ask us directly and we'll reply within one business day.
